SALT LAKE CITY – The ninth-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team suffered a loss in the debut of head coach
Shelley Jarrard on Friday night in the Behnken Field House. No. 20 Westmont used strong inside play to come away with a 71-61 victory.
Westminster was playing its first game of the season and the first game as Jarrard as head coach. They struggled much of the night shooting the ball and had a hard time overcoming the inside presence of the visiting Warriors. Westminster finished the game shooting just 40.4% from the field and was outscored in the paint 40-28.
Nicole Yazzie led the way for Westminster with 14 points. She never got in a rhythm shooting the ball and finished 2-of-12 in the game. She did find the stroke at the line where she was a perfect 10-for-10.
Jenteal Jackson added 13 points and five assists with three makes from beyond the arc. Freshman
Shelby Ellsworth also had 13.
Westmont improves to 2-0 on the year with the victory. They were led by Vanessa Farias and her 22 points. Tugce Canitez scored 18 points and Lisa Peterson added 12.
Westminster will look for their first win of the season on Saturday night when they host Northern New Mexico. The action begins at 5 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
