SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's basketball team defeated Northern New Mexico 100-52 in the home opener on Friday night in the Behnken Field House.

This is just the seventh time in team history that Westminster has reached the 100-point plateau and they improve to 4-0 to start the year for just the third time in school history.  The last time the Griffins reach 100 was during a 103-68 win over Montana Western on Jan.19, 2008.

The Griffins controlled the game all night behind 56.5% shooting and a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint.  Westminster outrebounded the visitors 51-29 and turned 16 offensive rebounds in 20 second chance points.  They also got out and ran with 20 fast break points and 12 points from 15 NNM turnovers.

Four Griffins reached double figures with Ben Walker leading the way with 16 points.  Walker was 7-of-9 from the floor and also had five rebounds.  Drew Phillips sparked a 51-point outing from the bench by scoring 15.  Phillips made his first six shots on the night and finished 6-of-7 with two rebounds and two blocks.  Jake Orchard added 14 points and five rebounds while Adam Rainbird had 10.

Northern New Mexico slips to 0-5 on the season.  They had three players score in double figures with Maria Caetano and Eric Bouma each putting in 11.

Westminster will now face maybe the toughest game of the season so far when they host No. 24 Saint Xavier (Ill.) on Saturday.  The game will begin at 7 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
