Griffins Rally Falls Short Against Bethel

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Westminster College women's basketball team rallied back from a double-digit deficit bet fell just short in a 76-72 loss against No. 6 Bethel on Friday at the Jackson Rotary Classic.

Westminster (3-4) took a 72-70 lead with 2:01 remaining before Bethel (5-1) scored the final six points of the game for the win.  The Griffins had trailed by 10 for most of the second half before the late run to take the lead.

Dana Bates had a huge afternoon for Westminster and led the team with a career-high 23 points and eight rebounds.  Bates did much of her work at the foul line where the senior was 14-of-19.  Nicole Yazzie added 11 points and five assists while Allie Eastman scored 10 points with eight rebounds.  Amy Krommenhoek scored 10 points off the bench.

Westminster shot just 32.7% from the field with seven threes.  They recorded 11 assists on 18 field goals and committed 13 turnovers.  They held Bethel to 39.7% shooting and forced 12 turnovers. 

Jana Roney led Bethel with 25 points and was perfect on all three of her attempts from beyond the arc.  Bethel took advantage of the long ball with 11 made threes on 23 attempts.

Westminster will look to salvage the final game of the trip to Jackson on Saturday when they face No. 6 Freed-Hardeman.
