JACKSON, Tenn. – The ninth-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team dropped a 67-58 decision against No. 2 Union (Tenn.) on Thursday evening at the Jackson Rotary Classic.
Westminster falls to 3-3 on the year with the loss while Union climbs to a perfect 5-0.
Westminster played with the lead for much of the first half before a late charge by Union evened the game at 33-33 at halftime. With the game tied 38-38 early in the second half, Union used a 7-0 run to open up a lead that they would never relinquish.
The Griffins shot 48.5% from the floor on the game and had four makes from beyond the arc. Westminster also made the most of 26 free throw attempts by scoring 22 points at the stripe. They outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs 27-20, but Westminster committed 21 turnovers to just 11 by the home team.
Dana Bates led the Westminster attack with 16 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the field. She also was 8-for-9 at the line and grabbed five rebounds.
Shelby Ellsworth added 10 points and five rebounds while
Jenteal Jackson scored 10.
Nicole Yazzie finished with nine points, five rebounds and five assists.
Lavanda Ross led Union with 25 points and Amy Philamlee added 10 points. The team shot 51% from the field and made eight triples.
Westminster will now face No. 6 Bethel on Friday in the second game for the Griffins as the Rotary Classic. Tipoff for that game is slated for 3 p.m.
