Record Night by Ellsworth Leads Griffins to Victory

SALT LAKE CITY – The ninth-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team got a huge night from Shelby Ellsworth in their 81-63 win over Cal Maritime at the Behnken Field House on Thursday evening during the Westminster Fall Classic.

Ellsworth became the second player in school history to record 20 points and 20 rebounds in the same game as she finished the contest with a career high 23 points while matching the school record by grabbing 20 rebounds. The 5-foot-11 freshman from Pasco, Wash. grabbed 13 of those rebounds in the second half while also scoring 15 points following intermission.

Westminster (2-1) took advantage of Ellsworth's big night by outscoring Cal Maritime (0-2) 49-33 in the second half to earn a second straight win.  After the game was tied for the eighth time at 39-39 with 16:48 to play, the Griffins went on a 16-5 run to take control of the game.  Allie Eastman scored nine of the 16 Griffin points during the run with Ellsworth adding four points and three rebounds.

The Griffins had a 49-26 advantage on the boards in the game and grabbed 28 on the offensive end.  The 28 second chances turned into 27 points and they had 34 points in the paint.  Westminster forced Cal Maritime into 13 turnovers and scored 15 points on those possessions.

Nicole Yazzie also had another big night with a season high 24 points.  Yazzie also had five assists and three steals while shooting 7-of-10 from the floor.  The junior had six makes from beyond the arc on eight attempts and extended her free throw streak to 24 with a 4-of-4 night at the stripe.

Ellsworth's double-double was the first of her career and could have been completed with just points and offensive rebounds.  She grabbed 14 of her 20 total rebounds on the offensive end.  The last 20-20 game by a Griffin came on Nov. 26, 2004 when Shalee Fackrell had 34 points and 20 rebounds against Eastern Oregon.

Dana Bates had 11 points and six rebounds while Jenteal Jackson added nine points, eight rebounds and five assists.  Eastman also scored nine points off the bench.

Alexsis Brown led Cal Maritime with 25 points and five rebounds.  Brown was 8-of-12 from the floor and went 6-for-7 from beyond the arc.

Westminster will continue play at the Fall Classic on Friday when they host College of Idaho.  The final game on Friday begins at 6 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
