SALT LAKE CITY – Two nights after dropping the Frontier Conference opener to Montana Tech at home, the 11th-ranked Westminster women's basketball team responded with a 92-59 win over Montana Western. Westminster never trailed in the contest and improves to 14-4 on the year and 1-1 in league play. Montana Western slips to 4-10 and 0-2 in the Frontier.
Westminster scored the first eight points of the game and it would not get closer than five the rest of the way. The Griffins would eventually push the lead to 34 at the 12:28 mark of the second half. Westminster shot 44.8% from the floor in the game and made 14 threes. The team also posted 20 assists to only nine turnovers and turned 29 Western turnovers into 29 points.
“I am really pleased with our effort tonight,” head coach JD Gustin said. “We played our tails off and got in got position for some good looks.”
Five players scored in double figures for the Griffins led by 17 from Brook Larsen off the bench. Larsen scored her career high on 5-of-10 shooting and by going 6-of-9 at the foul line.
Nicole Yazzie added 18 points with 15 coming from her five triples on seven attempts.
Dani Evans had 14 points while
Allie Eastman and
Michelle Pace scored 13 apiece. Yazzie added seven assists and three steals.
Dana Bates grabbed a team-bets eight rebounds.
Hayley Pettit led UMW with 13 points and nine rebounds. Nicole Tams, Samantha Bignell, and Rheanna Padden had eight points each. Western won the rebound battle 50-36.
Westminster will now hit the road for two Frontier Conference road games. The first comes on Thursday, January 13 in Helena, Montana against Carroll College. The trip concludes on Saturday, January 15 against Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana.
