SALT LAKE CITY – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced the 2009-10 Division I Men's Basketball All-America Teams on Tuesday. Westminster's
Blair Prowse was named to the third team while
Ben Walker was named an honorable mention.
Prowse, a 6-4 senior forward from South Jordan, was named a Third Team All-American. He finished second on the team in scoring this season at 14.1 points per game. Prowse led the Griffins with 86 made three-pointers and sot 37.2% from beyond the arc. He finished 10th in the Frontier Conference in scoring and third in steals at 1.67 per contest. He was named First Team All-Frontier Conference and twice was the conference player of the week. He becomes the second Griffin to make the All-America Third Team and the fifth player to make one of the three annual teams.
Walker, a 6-7 junior forward from Lehi, was named Honorable Mention All-American. Walker averaged 15.4 points per game during the season to lead the team. He finished second nationally in field goal percentage at 67.7% and was second in the Frontier in blocked shot at 1.45 per game. His 49 blocked shots this season set a school record for most in a season and also made him the school's career leader in blocked shots. Walker was a First Team All-Frontier Conference selection and becomes the eighth Griffin t be named an Honorable Mention All-American.
The selections are made by the NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches' Association All-America Committee and comprises a First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention Team. There are 10 members on each of the first three All-America teams.
Oklahoma Baptist and Azusa Pacific (Calif.), two teams still playing in the National Championship final tonight, each have a First Team selection. Oklahoma Baptist senior forward Nate Brumfield, a two-time All-America First Team honoree, has been named the 2009-10 NAIA Player of the Year. Dominique Johnson, a senior guard from Azusa Pacific, was picked to the First Team. Johnson was a Third Team selection last season.
With one more game to be played, Brumfield ranks first in the NAIA in field goal percentage (.690), third in scoring (22.8 ppg) and 24th in rebounding (8.5 rpg). He is the Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Year and hit for 20-or-more points this year on 23 occasions. He has also compiled 11 double-doubles this season. During the National Championship (through four games), Brumfield has averaged over 21 points, 7.5 rebounds and shot 66 percent from the field.
Leading the No. 15-seed Cougars to their second ever National Championship final, Azusa's Johnson leads the club in scoring (17.1 ppg) and 3-pointer's (64), and ranks second in rebounding (4.2 rpg) and assists (2.0 apg). A native of Detroit, Mich., Johnson was named to the All-Golden State Athletic Conference Team. In the semifinal win over Southern Polytechnic State (Ga.) on Monday, he reached his ninth straight game of 10-plus points and 33rd overall (in 37 games).
The Rawlings-NAIA Coach of the Year, All-Tournament Team, Tournament MVP, Team Sportsmanship Award and Hustle Award will be announced at the conclusion of the National Championship game Tuesday, which is televised live nationally on CBS College Sports Network.
