Griffins Rule Second Half in 64-46 Victory

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The sixth-ranked Westminster men's basketball team defeated Point Loma Nazarene 64-46 on Saturday night. Westminster used a 43-26 second half to turn a one point halftime lead into the 18 point victory. The Griffins become the first team in school history to start a season 11-0 with the victory.

Westminster used a 10-0 run early in the second half to turn a one point lead into a 37-26 advantage with 12:32 remaining. Point Loma (6-5) would get to within 51-43 at the 6:17 mark before a 13-3 run by the Griffins to finish the game.

Westminster shot just 40% from the field in the game but was 6-of-10 from beyond the arc in the second half. The held PLNU to 37.5% shooting and just 2-of-12 (16.7%) from beyond the arc. Westminster also turned 18 Point Loma turnovers into 27 points and won the rebounding battle 40-33.

Michael Stockton led all scorers with 26 points. The senior guard scored 20 points in the second half and shot 8-of-11 from the field. He added three assists and three steals while shooting 8-of-9 at the foul line. AJ Reilly scored 15 points with four treys in his home town. Tanner Gregory posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

James Hancock led PLNU with 16 points and added 12 rebounds for a double-double. The Sea Lions bench outscored the Griffins reserves 17-7 and the team blocked eight shots.

Westminster will complete this post-finals road trip on Monday when they face No. 10 Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif. at 7:30 p.m.
