CALDWELL, Idaho –
Michael Stockton scored 22 points as the 12th-ranked Westminster men's basketball team defeated Warner Pacific 82-75 at the Golden Rule Shootout on Friday evening. Westminster (5-0) outscored Warner Pacific 46-37 in the second half to earn the victory. This is just the second time in school history the Griffins have started 5-0.
The game was tied at 64-64 with 5:04 remaining before the Griffins went on a 10-1 run to take control of the game. Six of the 10 points came from the foul line. They forced five turnovers during the two minute and 30 second run and went 14 of 16 the rest of the game.
The Griffins shot 56.9% from the field and 61.9% in the second half. They struggled from beyond the arc, going just 1 of 10. Each team grabbed 29 rebounds while the Griffins turned six offensive boards into seven points. They also forced Warner Pacific (3-1) into 14 turnovers which resulted in 27 Westminster points.
Stockton shot 8 of 10 from the field in the game with both misses coming from beyond the arc. He also added a team-best five assists while committing just two turnovers.
Jake Orchard and
Tanner Gregory finished with 16 points apiece and
Jordan Bjornberg added 15. Gregory grabbed seven rebounds to lead the team while Orchard came up with three steals.
Biniam Tadele and Sean Gaines scored 16 points apiece to lead the Knights. Nick Schultens and Andre Davis were also in double figures with 15 and 12 points respectively. Warner Pac shot 43.6% from the floor and got 21 points from the bench.
Westminster will look for a fourth consecutive Golden Rule Shootout title when they face the College of Idaho on Saturday at 8 p.m.
