Women’s Basketball Returns to California for Two Games

SALT LAKE CITY – The 10th-ranked Westminster women's basketball team travels to California for two games against teams from the California Pacific Conference. Westminster will face William Jessup in Rocklin, California on Friday, November 19 at 6:30 p.m. They trip continues on Saturday, November 20 at 3 p.m. against Simpson University in Redding.

Westminster takes a 7-1 overall record and six-game winning streak on the road with them. The Griffins are 2-1 away from home this season and are 16-5 away from home over the past two seasons including neutral site games. Michelle Pace leads the Griffins in scoring at 14.8 points per game. Pace is shooting 58.7% from the field and 75% at the foul line. Dani Evans averages 11.1 ppg while Nicole Yazzie (9.6), Allie Eastman (9.3), and Jenteal Jackson (8.8) are all above eight points per contest.

First of Two with the Warriors
The meeting with William Jessup is the first of two this season. The two teams will meet in the Behnken Field House on December 3. Westminster leads the all-time series 1-0, picking up a 94-60 win over the Warriors on October 30, 2009. William Jessup is 0-5 this season and coming off losses to Oregon Tech and Northwest Christian last weekend. Nicole Aboumrad leads the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game.

First Time for Everything
Saturday's game with Simpson will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams. It will start a stretch of four straight games against teams Westminster has never played. Simpson enters the weekend at 1-3 on the season after an 87-76 win over Southern Oregon on Tuesday. Nichole Jones leads the team in scoring at 16 ppg and is followed closely by Kylie Shaw at 15 ppg and Tiffany Johnson at 12 ppg.

Mike Lageschulte will call the play-by-play for all games with Keshia Catten providing color commentary during Saturday games. Last Weekend
Westminster completed the 2010 Westminster Fall Classic with a 3-0 record. They opened the tournament with a 65-54 win over Cal Baptist. Michelle Pace scored 20 points and grabbed seven boards in the victory. Westminster had just nine turnovers and scored 15 points off 21 Cal Baptist turnovers.

The next night, Westminster defeated the College of Idaho 78-56 behind 21 points from Nicole Yazzie. The team shot 51.9% from the field while holding C of I to 32.1%.

The weekend concluded with a 94-34 win over Pacific Union. Rebecca Beaudoin led four players in double figures with 16 points. Brooke Larsen had 15 points and eight rebounds while the team shot 52.2% from the field and made 10 threes.

Ranking the Griffins
Westminster can be found in the NAIA top 50 in 21 statistical categories. They ranks second nationally in total blocks (31), total assists (138) and total scoring offense (577). The 56 made 3-pointers ranks fourth while the 81 total steals is sixth. Westminster is 11th in the NAIA in free throw percentage at 77.1% and 17th in assists per game at 17.25.

Pace is Top Player
Michelle Pace was named the Frontier Conference women's basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday. She is the first Griffin to claim the award this season and wins for the first time in her career. For the weekend, Pace averaged 16 points and seven rebounds. She was 20 of 33 from the field (61 percent) and 9 of 12 from the free throw line (75 percent).

Frontier Favorites
In a poll of the Frontier Conference women's basketball coaches, the Westminster women's basketball team was chosen to win the 2010-11 championship. The Griffins received five first-place votes and 47.5 total points in the poll. They also received a split first-place vote with Lewis-Clark State College. This is the first time the Griffin shave been chosen to win the league and the first time they have received a first-place vote.

Nation Taking Notice
The Westminster women's basketball team will start the 2010-11 season with a No. 10 national ranking. The NAIA Women's Division I Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Preseason Poll was released by the NAIA on October 25 with the Griffins receiving 223 points to earn the highest preseason ranking in school history. Westminster finished last season ranked ninth in the final poll.

Doubling Up
Westminster will play on back-to-back nights 10 times during the 2010-11 season. They actually played on three straight nights last weekend, picking up a win on all three. They have now claimed three sweeps of back-to-back games with one split. The Griffins are 4-0 in the first games of a back-to-back and 3-1 in the second game.

Home Cooking
Over the past three seasons, Westminster has gone 31-5 at home including a perfect 14-0 in Frontier Conference action. They have won five straight at home to start the year and 17 of the last 18 games played in the Behnken Field House. Westminster has won 17 straight conference home games dating back to the 2007-08 season with the last conference home loss coming on January 24, 2008 to Carroll, 66-56.

Handling Their Business
The Griffins are 7-0 against teams that are not ranked in the NAIA top 25 this season after going 24-0 in that situation last year. Over the past three seasons, Westminster is 55-2 against non-ranked opponents. The last unranked team to defeat Westminster was Georgetown College (Ky.) on December 6, 2008. That is a span of 47 straight wins over unranked opposition.

Next Week
Westminster will spend Thanksgiving in Caldwell, Idaho for the Lady Yote Classic. The Griffins will play Whitworth at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 26. They will face George Fox on Saturday, November 27 at 3 p.m.
