LAS VEGAS – The 12th-ranked Westminster men's basketball team picked up two wins at the Las Vegas Shootout over the weekend. Westminster defeated Vanguard 85-49 on Friday night and then picked up a 71-58 decision over Fresno Pacific on Saturday. Westminster is now 4-0 on the season.
Against Vanguard, Westminster shot 52.7% from the field and finished with a 51-35 rebounding advantage. They did commit 21 turnovers but, overcame that with 42 points in the paint and 14 fast break points. The defense held Vanguard (0-1) to 24.6% shooting and forced 16 turnovers which resulted in 19 Griffin points.
Jake Orchard led four Griffins in double figures with 20 points. He went 9 of 12 from the floor with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Michael Stockton finished with 18 points, three assists and four steals.
Tanner Gregory had his second double-double of the year behind 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Jake Harley added 11 points.
In Saturday's game with Fresno Pacific, Westminster used a strong first half to carry them to victory. The griffins shot 51.7% from the floor in the first 20 minutes and held a 40-28 lead at intermission. They shot just 38.1% in the second half but, FPU shot just 38.7% in the same time frame. Westminster committed just nine turnovers and went 21 of 23 at the foul line.
Orchard finished with a game-high 26 points and added 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Stockton had 16 points and six assists while
Jordan Bjornberg finished with 14 points. Gregory had 10 points and seven rebounds. Westminster got just two points off the bench compared to 15 from FPU.
Westminster will be on the road again next week when they travel to Caldwell, Idaho for the Golden Rule Shootout. Westminster will open against Warner Pacific on November 19 at 6 p.m.
