SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's volleyball team used the inspired effort of senior
Ericka Evans to pull off a 3-0 sweep of Montana State-Northern on Saturday afternoon in the Behnken Field House. Evans finished with 12 kills as Westminster (11-11, 7-6 Frontier) won by scores of: 25-14, 26-24, 25-17. It was the final home match for Evans who finishes her career 24-12 in the Behnken Field House.
Westminster came out strong with 13 kills and a .333 hitting efficiency in the first set. They had just one hitting error in the opening frame with Evans posting five kills. MSU-Northern (11-11, 4-8) gave the Griffins a battle in set two. Trailing 22-24, the Griffins scored four straight points to secure the second set victory. Westminster hit .250 in the second set and recorded 14 kills. Westminster had no problem in the final set, hitting .310 and posting a 17-8 advantage in kills.
The Griffins finished with 44 kills while holding Northern to just 32 in the match. The .297 hitting efficiency is the second highest of the season, trailing just the .347 hit against Montana Western on September 16. Westminster also recorded 48 digs and four blocks. They held Northern to just .078 hitting and forced 23 hitting errors.
Evans posted double digit kills for the third straight match and the seventh time this season. She added 12 digs for her 16th career double-double. Evans is now three digs shy of 800 in her career.
Kenzie Mitchell followed her 14 kill effort from Thursday with 12 today. Mitchell hit .269 to go with two blocks. Stephanie Jones added nine kills and a career high five service aces.
Emily Atkinson had 38 assists while
Kyndall Kordakis posted 12 digs.
With the win, Westminster clinches the No. 4 seed in the Frontier Conference Tournament in two weeks.
Westminster will now head to Lewiston, Idaho to battle ninth-ranked Lewis-Clark State College on Friday, November 5.
