Griffins Survive Five Setter with UGF

SALT LAKE CITY – It wasn't the prettiest of matches, but the Westminster women's volleyball team came away with a 3-2 win over Great Falls on Thursday night in the Behnken Field House. After winning the opening set, Westminster found themselves in a 2-1 hole heading into the fourth set. The Griffins battled through and found a way to win the match in five.

Westminster won by scores of: 25-19, 22-25, 20-25, 25-17, 17-15.

The Griffins (10-11, 6-6 Frontier) jumped out quick and took the first set behind 12 kills and three service aces. They hit .250 in the opening set while recording 13 digs. Great Falls (7-16, 4-7) rallied in sets two and three thanks to hitting .351 and .405 in the two sets respectively. Westminster hung around in the second with a .324 hitting efficiency, but couldn't pull out the set with 11 ties and five lead changes.

Down 2-1, Westminster got defensive in the fourth set picking up 21 digs and three blocks. They held the Argos to .070 hitting in the fourth while forcing them into eight hitting errors. The two teams played through 11 ties and four lead changes in the fifth set with Westminster finally winning on the third match point. Westminster hit .222 in the deciding frame and collected 13 digs. The Griffins lone block of the set came on the final point.

The match featured 37 ties and 12 lead changes with both teams hitting above .220. Westminster finished with 57 kills and 78 digs to go with eight service aces and five blocks. They hit .223 in the match which is the highest they have hit since September 25.

Kenzie Mitchell led the attack with a career high 16 kills. Her .387 efficiency is the second-best of her career and she added two blocks and three digs. Ericka Evans added 13 kills and tied her career high with 21 digs. Stephanie Jones hit .300 with eight kills and Ashley Marchant also had eight schools. Emily Atkinson dished out 39 assists with eight digs and six kills. Kyndall Kordakis collected 19 digs.

Westminster will return to action on Saturday, October 30 at 2 p.m. against Montana State Northern. It will be the final match in the Behnken Field House for Ericka Evans.
