SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's volleyball team started slow and never responded against 21st-ranked Rocky Mountain College on Thursday evening in the Behnken Field House. Rocky Mountain took the match 3-0 while handing the Griffins a third consecutive defeat. The loss drops Westminster to 8-9 on the season and 4-4 in the Frontier Conference while Rocky improves to 16-5 and 6-2.
Rocky took the opening set 25-19 after hitting .395 in the set and recording a 20-12 advantage in kills. Westminster battled through much of set two before falling 25-18. The Griffins slowed the Rocky attack to just .130 in the set and had 11 kills of their own. The third set was all Rocky as they pounded out 13 more kills with a .346 hitting efficiency.
Westminster finished the night with 33 kills, but hit just .097. Eight different players had multiple kills for the Griffins and they also had six players post multiple digs. The Griffins finished with 48 digs in the match to go with six blocks.
Ashley Marchant led all Griffins with seven kills in a reserve role. Marchant hit .312 on her 16 attacks and also notched one dig.
Katie Vance had a solid night with six kills and a .321 efficiency. Vance picked up three digs to go with her team-leading four blocks.
Becky Burke added six kills in her first start since September 3.
Emily Atkinson posted her fourth double-double finishing with 28 assists and 11 digs and
Kyndall Kordakis recorded 14 digs.
Ashley Welborn and Sara Brunner led Rocky with 10 kills apiece. The Bears hit .278 for the match with nine blocks and 62 digs.
Westminster will look to bounce back when they host 25th-ranked Carroll College on Saturday, October 16 at 2 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
