SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's basketball team won for the 12th consecutive time with an 80-51 decision against Carroll on Thursday night in the Behnken Field House. No. 14 Westminster improves to 16-4 on the season and improves to 5-0 in Frontier Conference action with its 19th straight regular season conference victory. Carroll falls to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
After giving up the first basket of the game, Westminster scored the next 10 points to open up a 10-2 advantage just four minutes into the contest. The teams traded mini-runs over the next 10 minutes, before the home standing Griffins turned a 30-22 lead into a 43-22 halftime advantage with a 13-0 run over the final four minutes of the half.
“We first had to figure out what they were going to do,” head coach JD Gustin said of Carroll. “They started the game running some stuff we hadn't seen on film so it took a minute to get our feet under us.”
The top shooting team in the NAIA continued that pace behind 55% shooting against Carroll. Westminster was almost as good from beyond the arc, connecting on 8-of-16 from distance. The Griffins controlled the boards to the tune of a 41-29 advantage and dominated the paint with a 48-18 cushion.
“Fortunately tonight everyone sold out to what we do and it resulted in a lot of easy baskets,” Gustin commented.
Keshia Catten led four Griffins in double figures with a season high 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting. Catten had five triples and finished with six assists. Catten is the reigning Frontier Conference Player of the week for the second time this season.
“That was just Keshia doing what she does,” said Gustin of his senior guard. “She didn't do anything different tonight than she normally does.”
Dani Evans posted 14 points in her return to the starting line-up filling in for
Nicole Yazzie who missed the game.
McKenzie Jessop had 11 points and eight rebounds to go with 10 points from
Allie Eastman.
The game was broadcast on the College Fanz Sports Network as the NAIA Game of the Week.
Westminster returns to action on Saturday, January 23 when they host Rocky Mountain College. Tipoff from the Behnken Field House is slated for 5:30 p.m.
