PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Westminster men's basketball team held on for a 71-68 win against Wisconsin-Platteville on Wednesday night at the Grand Canyon Classic. No. 12 Westminster (10-4) led by 20 with 6:58 remaining, but they needed two
Michael Stockton free throws with two second remaining to claim a seventh consecutive win.
The Griffins led 24-12 at the half and used an 18-4 run in the second half to build a 52-32 lead with just under seven minutes to play. Westminster only made two baskets the remainder of the game and sealed the win by going 10-of-11 at the charity stripe during the final minute of the game. Wisconsin-Platteville (8-4) kept inching closer thanks to connecting from beyond the arc four times in the final minute.
Ben Walker led the Westminster attack with 23 points by shooting 7-of-11 from the field and 9-of-11 at the foul line.
Jeramie Hopson added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Weston Anderson scored 10 points and Stockton scored nine points off the bench, all from the foul line.
Curt Hanson led Wisconsin-Platteville with 33 points and made five triples. Mike Shaw had 16 points while Eric Wall chipped in eight.
Next for Westminster is the Frontier Conference opener against Montana State-Northern on Thursday, January 7. Tipoff in the Behnken Field House is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
