FRESNO, Calif. – The Westminster women's volleyball team went 1-1 at the Sunbird Invitational hosted by Fresno Pacific University on Friday. The Griffins won the day's first match 3-0 over Menlo College. Southern Oregon took the final match of the day in a three-set sweep. Westminster is now 2-4 on the season heading into day two of the tournament.
Westminster earned its first sweep of the season with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-19 victory against Menlo College. Westminster was led by 10 kills from
Ashley Marchant. Marchant hit .381 in the match while chipping in three digs.
Ericka Evans and Stephanie Jones finished with seven kills apiece.
Katie McLintock recorded 16 digs and
Megan Evans dished out 24 assists.
Southern Oregon handed the Griffins a 25-19, 25-21, 25-17 defeat to conclude the first day of action. Marchant again led the team in kills, this time with 12. Westminster hit just .115 as a team in the match compared to .330 by Southern Oregon.
Whitney Roseborough finished with four kills and
Becky Burke added three.
Westminster will face Cornerstone and No. 1 Fresno Pacific during the second day of the tournament on Saturday. The Fresno match will mark the third consecutive year the Griffins have faced Fresno when they were ranked No. 1 in the country.
