Winning Streak Reaches School Record 10 Straight

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's basketball team won a school record 10th straight game on Saturday night, 78-63 against No. 25 Montana State-Northern. No. 17 Westminster (19-5, 9-0 Frontier) went on a 13-4 run during the first half and eventually built the lead to 25 in the first 20 minutes. The Griffins shot 55.2% and forced Northern into 18 turnovers during the opening 20 minutes. The previous school record winning streak was nine, set during the 2000-01 season.

Shannon Evans led Westminster with 19 points and six assists. The senior guard went 6-of-10 from the field and had five steals. Westminster forced 27 MSU-Northern turnovers in the game, resulting in 28 Westminster points. Elisa Leader added 17 points and three steals.

“I thought we started slow,” Westminster head coach JD Gustin said. “Northern is a good team and they came in here and fought. I told the kids, anytime you get a college basketball win you need to enjoy it.”

Westminster also benefited from a 21-13 bench point advantage, sparked by 10 points from Dani Evans. The Griffins were solid at the charity stripe, making 87.0%, while Northern was just 63.2%.

“Dani (Evans) was good off the bench again tonight,” stated Gustin. “I am a little concerned about us getting complacent, but Shannon (Evans) and Leader have been through this conference and know what it takes.”

MSU-Northern (14-10, 6-3) got 14 points from Taylor Keller to lead the team. Samm Schermele chipped in 12 and Danielle Tower had 11 points and six rebounds.

Westminster now heads north for a game with Montana Western. Westminster has never won in nine trips to Dillon.
