Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's basketball team overpowered Great Falls to the tune of 87-32 on Thursday night. No. 3 Westminster used a stellar defense attack to shut down the leading scorer in the Frontier Conference, Rayshaun Ames, holding him to just seven points. Offensively the Griffins (21-2, 7-1 Frontier) shot 60.0% from the field and had nine makes from beyond the arc. Westminster is now 22-0 all-time against Great Falls, the best record against any opponent in school history.
“We are really proud of our guys for executing the game plan,” Westminster assistant coach
Adam Hiatt said. “We felt if we could take Ames out early they would be deflated, and we did.”
Geoff Payne led Westminster with 16 points and nine rebounds, playing just 19 minutes. He helped the team to a 32-12 advantage in the paint and a 45-26 rebounding advantage. The Griffin defense held the Argos to just 19.2% shooting and only 14.8% during a 41-10 first half. The 32 points allowed is the second fewest ever by a Westminster opponent.
Conner Nielsen finished with 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Westminster posted a 49-17 bench scoring advantage and all but three players scored.
Jordan Jacobs became the school's all-time leader in career 3-point field goals made when he connected on his second of the game at the 12:16 mark of the second half. Jacobs now has 216 career makes from deep and has at least one in every game this season.
Ames' seven points were the high for Great Falls (7-17, 1-7). Matt Neimeyer and JayTee Tarpley scored six apiece and Tom Donnelly grabbed a team-best five rebounds.
Westminster now gets set to host No. 21 Montana State-Northern on Saturday, February 7. Tipoff between the two conference leading teams is slated for 7:30 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
