Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's basketball team held off a late rally by Carroll College to win 79-68 on Saturday night. No. 17 Westminster led by 23 with seven minutes to play but Carroll kept attacking and got as close as seven with under two minutes to play.
Elisa Leader hit a big three and then Leader and
Shannon Evans each hit two free throws to seal the win. Westminster (23-5, 13-0 Frontier) shot 49.1% from the field and grabbed nine offensive rebounds.
“I think we lost interest a little bit,” head coach JD Gustin said. “You have to give Carroll a lot of credit. They played hard and they have a lot of pride.”
Leader led the way with 21 points, shooting 9-of-12 in the game.
Shannon Evans went for 17 points, five rebounds, and eight assists. The Griffin bench was big, outscoring Carroll 27-20 with all points coming from 14 by
Suzanne Young and 13 by
McKenzie Jessop. Westminster turned 22 Carroll turnovers into 29 points and controlled the paint 42-24.
Carroll (14-14, 3-9) got a huge game from Elly Bruursema. Bruursema went for 33 points, connecting on five 3-pointers and grabbing four rebounds. The Saints scored 28 points off of 18 Westminster turnovers.
Westminster will conclude the regular season against Lewis-Clark State on Saturday, February 28. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m. from Lewiston, Idaho.
