Men’s Basketball Holds off Late Rally for Fifth Straight Win

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Westminster men's basketball team picked up its fifth consecutive victory by defeating William Jewell 68-84 at the Las Vegas Hoopla on Saturday night. No. 12 Westminster (8-4) led the entire game, but needed free throws down the stretch to hold off William Jewell (5-5) by four.

Westminster carried a 37-22 lead into the intermission and eventually pushed the lead to 18 with 12:08 remaining in the game. William Jewell kept fighting and with 39 seconds to play the Westminster lead was just 64-61. Michael Stockton made two free throws with six second left to push the lead to five. The next William Jewell possession saw Kyle Fisher hit a three to cut the advantage to two with three seconds to play. Jeramie Hopson then made two free throws to seal the victory for the Griffins.

Blair Prowse led Westminster with 16 points and connected four times from beyond the arc. Hopson finished with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 33 minutes. Stockton added nine points, six rebounds, and five assists off the bench. Tanner Gregory also had 11 points off the bench.

Westminster shot 52% from the floor and turned eight offensive rebounds into 10 points. They scored 18 points off of 15 William Jewell turnovers. The Griffins grabbed 33 rebounds and had 14 assists against 17 turnovers.

Nick Larson led William Jewell with 24 points and eight rebounds. Fisher added 10 points and was 2-of-6 from long range.

Westminster will take 10 days off before facing Southwestern (Ariz.) in Phoenix, Arizona during the Grand Canyon Classic on December 29. They Griffins will also face Wisconsin-Platteville during the trip to Phoenix on December 30.
