LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Westminster men's basketball team scored five straight points with under two minutes to play and then hung on to defeat Notre Dame College 55-53 on Friday night at the Las Vegas Hoopla. Nick McCartney missed a 3-pointer as time expired that would have given Notre Dame College (7-4) the victory.
The 12th-ranked Westminster (7-4) squad built an eight point advantage when
Blair Prowse hit a three with 9:28 remaining in the game. Notre Dame College used a 13-5 run to tie the game at 50 with 1:56 remaining. On the next Griffin possession,
Weston Anderson made his second three of the game.
Conner Nielsen made two free throws on the next Westminster trip which turned into the game winners.
Westminster shot 46% in the game, but was only 9-of-23 in the second half. They also struggled from beyond the arc finishing 6-of-23 and 1-of-9 in the first 20 minutes. The Griffins grabbed 31 rebounds and totaled 19 assists on 23 made baskets. They limited Notre Dame College to 42.3% shooting and forced them into 11 turnovers which resulted in six Westminster points.
Westminster got a team-high 12 points from Prowse, Anderson, and
Ben Walker. Walker also gathered seven rebounds and blocked four shots.
Jeramie Hopson had seven points and five assists while
Michael Stockton recorded seven assists and only one turnover.
The Griffins complete the trip to Vegas with a game against William Jewell at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 19.
