Hot Shooting Carries No. 6 Freed-Hardeman Past Westminster

Dani Evans led the Griffins with 13 points against No. 6 Freed-Hardeman on Saturday.
Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – Freed-Hardeman set a new program record by making 17-of-30 from 3-point range - including 9-of-15 in the second half - to turn a two point halftime lead into a 101-74 win over the Westminster women's basketball team on Saturday at the Jackson Rotary Classic. The loss to No. 6 Freed-Hardeman (7-0) completed the Griffins (4-4) trip to Tennessee with a 1-2 record.

Tara Deatheridge had the hottest hand for FHU, draining 9-of-15 from behind the arc to tie her school record for most 3-pointers in a game that she established on Dec. 13, 2008. She hit 7-of-8 in the second half as FHU outscored the Griffins 61-36 over the game's final 20 minutes.

FHU pushed ahead by seven points at 27-20 with 10:11 to go in the first half, but Westminster followed with a 10-3 run to tie the game at 30-30 three minutes later. Freed-Hardeman's lead would never extend beyond a basket for the rest of the half, with Whitney Johnson's baseline jumper as the first half wound to a close giving the Lady Lions a 40-38 halftime lead.

The second half, however, was an entirely different story.

The Griffins opened the half with two quick baskets to take a 42-40 lead, but Deatheridge followed with the first of her seven second half 3-pointers to give the Lady Lions a lead that they would not relinquish.

Westminster, which made 10-of-17 3-pointers in the first half, had its offensive bread-and-butter neutralized by FHU's defense. Nicole Yazzie made Westminster's only 3-pointer of the second half with 15:13 to play, cutting Freed-Hardeman's lead to 51-50. Moments later, FHU went on a quick 8-0 run to go ahead by 10 points (65-55) at the 11:37 mark.

The Lady Lions didn't pull away until a few minutes later. Westminster was still within nine points at 72-63 with 8:44 remaining, but Deatheridge drilled another 3-pointer as FHU closed the game on a 29-11 run. Natalie Shumpert's 3-pointer with inside a minute to play was the 17th of the game for Freed-Hardeman, breaking the previous record of 16 set on Nov. 13, 1999 and again on Nov. 15, 1999.

Dani Evans was the top scorer for the Griffins, going for 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Keshia Catten added 12 points and McKenzie Jessop had 10. Westminster shot grabbed 25 rebounds and shot 52.8% in the game, but they turned it over 18 times which turned into 28 points for FHU.

Deatheridge led all scorers with 27 points and also corralled six steals. Jana Cross added 20 points that included a 12-for-12 performance from the free throw line. Whitney Johnson had 15 points, followed by Natalie Shumpert and Meribeth Boehler with 14 points each. Hannah Parsley rounded out the scoring with 11 points.

Westminster will return to action against Evergreen State on Friday, November 27 in the first of two games at the Evergreen State Thanksgiving Tournament. Tipoff of the Friday game is 7:30 p.m.
