JACKSON, Tenn. – The Westminster women's basketball team lost 93-68 to No. 1 Union (Tenn.) in the first game of the Jackson Rotary Classic on Thursday. Westminster (3-3) had three players reach double figures, but couldn't overcome the 61.5% shooting of the home squad.
Westminster scored the first point of the game when
Dani Evans made one-of-two free throws. However, Union rattled off 14 straight points over the next five minutes to lead 14-1. The Lady Bulldogs continued on a 27-9 run over the first 10 minutes of play. Union stretched their halftime lead to 52-31.
Union's big first half was sparked by 71 percent shooting from the field, including 44 percent (4-9) from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes of play.
Sara Chan of Union poured in 16 first half points.
In the second half, Union extended their lead to as many at 31 points, 87-56, at the 4:37 mark. Union cruised to the 93-68 final.
McKenzie Jessop led the Westminster attack with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jessop shot 9-of-12 from the floor while adding two assists and two steals.
Nicole Yazzie had 12 points and five assists off the bench and
Allie Eastman scored 10 points. Westminster shot 50% in the game, but turned the ball over 25 times.
Chan finished with a game-high 22 points for Union. Kaitlin Dudley added 16 points, Lavanda Ross scored 15 points and Kayla Hudson posted 11 points. Hudson sank three-of-six three pointers. Kayla Bryant for Union added two-of-four shooting from behind the arc.
The Griffins continue the trip on Friday when they face No. 9 Lambuth at 5:00 p.m.
