LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 8 Westminster men's basketball team couldn't hold a 15-point second half lead, and lost to No. 3 Fresno Pacific 87-85 in double overtime on Saturday night at the Las Vegas Classic. Westminster (1-3) didn't make a field goal over the final 3:56 of the second overtime, yet had a chance to win thanks to 6-of-9 shooting from the free throw line in the second extra period.
Fresno Pacific (5-0) broke an 85-85 tie when Adrian Hurtado made a jumper with 3.5 seconds remaining. Westminster had one last chance, but
Blair Prowse couldn't connect on a desperation shot at the buzzer. The Griffins held a 71-66 lead with three minutes left in the first overtime before Fresno Pacific rallied to tie the game with 10 second left.
Westminster put five players in double figures in the game.
Ben Walker finished the night with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He went 6-of-12 from the floor and also had one blocked shot and one steal.
Weston Anderson also scored 20 points with help from 10-of-14 shooting at the line. Prowse had 13 points while
Conner Nielsen and
Jordan Bjornberg had 10 points each.
Fresno Pacific finished the Las Vegas Classic at 2-0 after knocking off No. 1 Robert Morris on Friday night. They were led by Todd Brown and Jesse Childs who each scored 19 points. Alex Davenport added 13 points and James Lewis chipped in 11.
Westminster next heads to Caldwell, Idaho for two games at the Golden Rule Shootout hosted by the College of Idaho. Westminster will open on Friday, November 20, against Northwest (Wash.) at 6:00 p.m.
