Westminster Holds On to Defeat Dana College

Box Score MESA, Ariz. – For the second consecutive day the Westminster men's basketball team started strong, this time a 19-5 run over the first seven minutes against Dana College. However, Dana (7-8) fought back before No. 6 Westminster (12-1) held on for the 76-71 victory. The Griffins led by double-digits most of the game, but three times in the final minute the lead was one. Westminster went 4-of-5 from the line in the final minute to secure the win.

Westminster placed three players in double-figures, led by 20 points from Geoff Payne. Payne recorded his third double-double of the year as he gathered 12 rebounds. Westminster held a 41-29 rebounding advantage and had nine offensive boards. Danny Stosich finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Jeramie Hopson filled the stat line with eight points, seven rebounds, eight assists, and one steal. The seven rebounds match his season high and the eight assists is a career high for Hopson. Jordan Jacobs added 12 points and five assists.

Jon Person led Dana College with 23 points and six rebounds. Dana fought back in the game by forcing 16 Westminster turnovers and scoring 25 points off of them. They also had a 16-9 advantage in fast break points.

Westminster now heads to Colorado for two games. The first is on Friday, January 2 when they face the Colorado School of Mines at 5:00 p.m. in Denver.
