Shelley Jarrard

Shelley Jarrard completed her 10th season as Westminster’s fourth women’s basketball coach. She has a winning record of 201-80 (.715) through 10 seasons. The Griffins have recorded eight winning seasons, made consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and RMAC Championship finals, won three straight Frontier Conference Championships and four NAIA tournament appearances.

In 2020-21, Westminster qualified for the NCAA II Tournament and advanced to the West Regional Final (Sweet 16) eventually losing 53-48 to Azusa Pacific (CA) and just shy of an Elite 8 appearance. Hunter Krebs and Sarah McGinley we're named to the NCAA II All-Tournament team and All-RMAC performers along with teammates Mariah Martin and Abby Mangum.  The Griffins qualified for the 2019-20 NCAA II tournament but never got to play as the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19. The Griffins played Colorado Mesa, for the second straight year, in the RMAC Championship and finished the season with a 24-7, 17-5 RMAC record. The team had four All-RMAC honorees—Hunter Krebs and Mariah Martín were named All-RMAC First Team, Sarah McGinley was named All-RMAC Second Team and Kaitlin Toluono received All-RMAC Honorable Mention.

In 2018-19, the Griffins compiled an overall record of 21-9, finished as conference runner-up in the RMAC and qualified for the NCAA II South Central Regional Tournament in their first year of eligibility. Gonzalez was named the RMAC Preseason Defensive and Offensive Player of the Year and All-RMAC First Team. Gonzalez was joined by Krebs and Olivia Eliss on the All-RMAC First Team.

Jarrard was named WBCA South Central Region Coach of the Year and a finalist for national coach of the of year. Denise Gonzalez was the RMAC Preseason Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year and All-RMAC First Team. Gonzalez was joined by Krebs and Olivia Elliss on the All-RMAC First Team.

In 2017-18, Westminster recorded its first winning season as an RMAC member and finished the regular season in fourth, with a 15-7 conference record. Denise Gonzalez and Hunter Krebs were the first Griffins to earn All-RMAC First Team and All-RMAC Second Team, respectively.

The program recorded a .462 winning percentage in 2015-16 and .423 in 2016-17. Syndee Taylor and Aubrey Vale were named All-RMAC Honrable Mention in 2016-17.  

The Griffins joined the RMAC in 2015 and began the NCAA DII membership process.  On September 1, 2018, Westminster completed the membership process and became official members of the NCAA and eligible for post season competition in the RMAC and NCAA D2 championships tournaments. 

Prior to NCAA II membership, Westminster appeared in four consecutive NAIA National Championships under Jarrard's leadership. They were the top seed in 2014 and 2015 and advanced to the quarterfinals in three of their four trips to the tournament. The Griffins won three-straight Frontier Conference Tournament titles during her tenure.

Jarrard has seen five players named All-American by the NAIA with two more receiving honorable mention honors. She coached two Frontier Conference Players of the Year, two Offensive-Players of the year and two Defensive Players of the Year. Jarrard was a three-time Frontier Conference Coach of the Year.  Nine players we're named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 25 named Academic All-Frontier Conference during Jarrard’s tenure.

In 2011 Jarrard was hired from Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) where she served as the lead assistant coach for the Bruins and played a pivotal role in SLCC winning back-to-back conference championships.

Prior to SLCC, she served two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Kansas State University (KSU). During her time at KSU, the team went 48-18 and won the 2006 WNIT championship. Prior to KSU, Jarrard spent 11 seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Utah from 1993-2004. During that time Utah appeared in seven NCAA Tournaments including its first ever appearance in the Sweet 16. The Utes won eight conference championships and three conference tournament championships.

During her playing career at Vanderbilt University, Jarrard was a 4-year letter winner for the Commodores. A starter for Vanderbilt’s 1993 NCAA Final Four team which ended the season at 30-3, Jarrard was named first-team all-Southeastern Conference and honorable mention All-America. She was also the 1993 NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional MVP. She was selected as a member of the SEC all-academic team. She finished her Vanderbilt Career with 1,003 points, 462 rebounds and 227 assists while making four trips to the Sweet 16 or better at the NCAA Championships.

Jarrard earned a bachelor’s degree in human and organizational development from Vanderbilt in 1993. The Gore, Okla., native was named 1989 Gatorade Player of the Year for Oklahoma as a senior at Webbers Falls High School.
