Griffins Fall to Top-Ranked Colorado Mesa

Game Breakdown

The Westminster Griffins faced a daunting challenge on Monday night, falling 90-47 to top-ranked and undefeated Colorado Mesa at Behnken Field House. The loss dropped Westminster to 8-15 overall and 5-12 in RMAC play, while the Mavericks improved to a perfect 27-1 and 17-0 in conference.

First Half

Colorado Mesa dominated from the opening tip, racing to a 10-0 lead behind early three-pointers from Hallie Clark and Tamryn Blom. The Mavericks shot 73.33% from the field in the first quarter while holding Westminster to just 21.43% shooting. Mason Rowland led the charge with 10 first-quarter points as Colorado Mesa built a 30-9 advantage. The Griffins showed more fight in the second quarter, with Nisa Ellis and Ellie Mitchell providing scoring, but the Mavericks' efficient offense extended the lead to 53-20 at halftime.

Second Half

Westminster found offensive rhythm in the third quarter, particularly from three-point range. Brianna Mendez sparked the Griffins off the bench with three three-pointers, scoring all 10 of her points in the period. Despite shooting 60.00% from beyond the arc in the third quarter, Westminster couldn't slow Colorado Mesa's interior attack as the Mavericks led 75-31 heading into the fourth. The Griffins played their best offensive quarter in the fourth, shooting 53.85% from the field and getting contributions from Achol Daw and Madison Anderson, but the deficit was too large to overcome in the 90-47 final.


Griffin Performances

Brianna Mendez led Westminster off the bench with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Ellie Mitchell added 9 points, going 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, while Madison Anderson contributed 6 points and Nisa Ellis chipped in 6 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Achol Daw provided a spark with 5 points on 2-of-3 shooting.

Westminster was outrebounded 43-27 and shot 32.7% from the field for the game. Colorado Mesa's Mason Rowland led all scorers with 21 points, while Olivia Reed added 16 points and 14 rebounds.
