Griffins Score Three Unanswered in Second Half to Top Colorado School of Mines, 3-1

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Westminster men's soccer team scored three unanswered second-half goals to beat Colorado School of Mines 3-1 on Thursday night at Dumke Field. After a first half in which the Griffins out-shot the Orediggers 8-3, every one of their six second-half shots was on target, and three of them found the net.

Game Breakdown

First Half

Westminster pressed from the opening whistle, earning corner kicks at 0:46 and 1:18. Mines took the lead at 11:53, when Avi Levin converted a penalty kick for a 1-0 advantage. The Griffins kept up the pressure, out-shooting Mines 8-3 in the half, but Orediggers goalkeeper Zachary MacDonald made three saves to keep the lead. Max Edwards forced a save at 24:37, and Owen Gallo was denied at 39:38 and again at 40:19. Oliver Olsen made a save of his own at 31:04 on a shot from Marcus Saa. Head coach Josh Pittman was shown a yellow card at 42:40. Mines led 1-0 at the break despite being out-shot.

Second Half

Westminster tied the match at 55:09. Gage Wood, who had a shot saved at 46:12, scored off a Stellan Blomberg assist to make it 1-1. Parker Stebbing put the Griffins ahead just 2:57 later, scoring an unassisted goal at 58:06 for a 2-1 lead.

Gallo (59:54) and Broc Underhill (62:35) each forced saves from MacDonald as Westminster kept pressing. Olsen preserved the one-goal lead at 70:50 with a save on Pol Garcia Oliveras. Ashton Duran then sealed the win at 84:29, scoring his first goal of the season off a Wood assist for the 3-1 final.

  • Parker Stebbing scored his third goal of the season on his lone shot of the night

  • Ashton Duran scored his first goal of the season, his only shot of the night

  • Stellan Blomberg recorded an assist on Wood's goal

  • Oliver Olsen earned the win in goal with two saves over 90 minutes
