Westminster Griffins Mountain Biking – Race 1 Recap

Powderhorn Resort, CO –
The Westminster Griffins officially launched their inaugural collegiate mountain biking season at Powderhorn Resort, just outside Grand Junction, Colorado. For many, it was a quick introduction to how collegiate MTB racing differs from riding laps at Round Valley. There are no scoreboards, jumbotrons, or packed stands — instead, the cheers come from teammates and coaches, and the competition unfolds where it should: in the woods, on dusty trails, up steep climbs, and across ski resorts where "just one more lap" can feel like a serious challenge.

The Venue
The opening event was hosted by Colorado Mesa University, and it was immediately clear how established and competitive the Colorado programs are. Their teams are large, their base areas resemble mini-villages, and their races are polished and well-run. For Westminster, it was the perfect opportunity to learn, to compete, and to make it known that the Griffins are officially part of the scene.

The Course
One word: tough.
From the start line, riders faced a mile-long climb up a ski hill on a double-track access road with endless switchbacks. Reaching the summit led into a short downhill stretch — a few moments of fun — before another climb, and then another. Each lap covered just two miles, but the intensity was undeniable: 15–20 minutes of climbing followed by a 4–5 minute descent. Unlike most cross-country courses, which are typically twice as long, Powderhorn compressed the effort into shorter but more demanding laps.

Goals and Grit
Heading into the weekend, expectations were realistic. The goals were simple: show up, learn the system, experience the competition, finish the race, and scout the venue ahead of Collegiate Nationals in October. Mission accomplished.

Westminster's lone competitor, Sabrina, delivered a strong debut, fighting through the climbs, pushing through the suffering, and finishing with resilience. The performance set the tone for what this first season is about — progress, not podiums.

What's Next
The Griffins return to action in two weeks at Eagle Point, Utah, on a course expected to be more traditional cross-country in style. The plan is clear: show up smarter, race harder, and continue to build momentum for the season.

Looking Ahead
As a brand-new program, Westminster is competing against larger, more established teams within a competitive conference. Challenges are expected, but so are growth and opportunity. The Griffins are also looking to expand their roster and encourage riders — especially those with NICA high school racing experience — to join the program and help build something special.

Final Thought
There will be challenges, there will be pain, and there may even be a few crashes — but most importantly, Westminster has taken its first step into collegiate mountain biking. The team is officially in the game, and the future looks promising.
