Salt Lake City, UT – The Westminster Griffins put up a battle in their season finale at Behnken Field House, but their late-game push fell just short in an 84-79 loss to Colorado Mesa. The game marked the end of the 2024-25 season and a farewell to four impactful seniors who left a lasting mark on the program.
Colorado Mesa jumped out to an early lead, taking a 43-34 advantage into halftime, but the Griffins came roaring back in the second half. Chase Potter and Ryan Rubenskas led the charge offensively, with Potter attacking the rim and Rubenskas battling in the paint.
The Griffins shot an impressive 60% from the field in the second half, including 19-for-24 from the free-throw line, clawing their way back into the game. They cut the deficit to one possession in the final minutes, but Colorado Mesa executed in the closing moments to hold on for the win.
Potter led Westminster with 23 points and six rebounds, while Rubenskas added 19 points. Donaval Avila contributed 16 points and four assists, showcasing his all-around game in his final collegiate appearance.
Honoring the Seniors
Westminster honored four seniors whose leadership, resilience, and skill have played a crucial role in the program's success.
After transferring from USU Eastern, Avila became a defensive force for the Griffins, often tasked with guarding the opponent's best player. His offensive efficiency was just as impressive, shooting over 50% from the field, 40% from three, and 80% from the free-throw line. His tenacity on both ends of the floor made him an invaluable piece of the team.
A graduate transfer with experience at UMKC and Valdosta State, Martin brought leadership and a deep knowledge of the game. His lightning-fast play and ability to mentor younger players made him a key contributor this season. Over his college career, he played in 117 games, with career highs of 22 points and 11 assists.
Potter, a transfer from Snow College and UVU, built a reputation for hitting clutch shots. From game-winners against Northwest Nazarene to a half-court buzzer-beater against Western Washington, he provided unforgettable moments for the Griffins. His offensive ability led to multiple 30-point games and two RMAC Player of the Week honors.
Ryan Rubenskas – Bridgewater, Massachusetts
As a graduate transfer, Rubenskas provided consistency and toughness at the center position. The only Griffin to attempt over 100 field goals while shooting over 60%, he was a dominant inside presence and led the team in double-doubles. His durability and offensive efficiency made him a cornerstone of the team's success.
Looking Ahead
With the 2024-25 season now in the books, Westminster turns its attention to offseason preparation and recruiting. The Griffins will look to build on the foundation laid by their departing seniors as they gear up for the 2025-26 campaign.
