Gunnison, CO – The Westminster Griffins women's basketball team wrapped up their final road game of the regular season with a 77-59 loss to Western Colorado University on Saturday. Despite a strong second-half push, the Griffins were unable to overcome an early deficit against the Mountaineers.
Western Colorado jumped out to a commanding lead, holding Westminster to just two points in the first quarter while scoring 15 of their own. The Griffins found more rhythm in the second quarter but still trailed 33-16 at halftime. Westminster put up 19 points in the third and 24 in the fourth, but the Mountaineers kept pace to secure the victory.
Nisa Ellis led the Griffins with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Teuila Nawahine added 11 points and seven rebounds. Maia Rhay and Za'kkria Robinson each contributed nine points. Westminster struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 1-for-16 from three-point range but found success inside, scoring 36 points in the paint.
Western Colorado was led by Ivey Schmidt, who scored a game-high 21 points, and Rachel Cockman, who added 17 points and seven rebounds. The Mountaineers also capitalized on their free-throw opportunities, shooting 14-of-15 from the line.
