GUNNISON, Colo. - Yusuf Mohamed had a game-high 21 points off of the bench and
Reme Torbert went 3-of-4 from long range to help Westminster men's basketball (12-16, 10-12 RMAC) finish 13-of-26 (50 percent) from long range in an 85-60 win at Western Colorado (5-23, 4-18 RMAC) on Saturday night at Paul Wright Gymnasium.
Mohamed went 6-of-10 from the floor, 8-of-8 at the free throw line and pulled in seven boards with three steals and two blocks, defensively.
Brayden Johnson added another 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting while tallying a team-high nine rebounds on the night.
Donaval Avila went 2-of-2 from long range and 3-for-3 overall to finish with eight points off of the bench and the Griffins finished the night with a 41-28 edge in bench points. Westminster had nine different players knock down a triple as the Griffins tied their season-high with 13 made three's.
Westminster raced out to a 20-5 lead in the first half as the Griffins limited Western to just 1-of-8 shooting to begin the game. The Griffins knocked down six first-half three's and led by as many as 17 before carrying a 15-point halftime lead into the break. Both teams went scoreless over the final 2:12 of the first half and Western went into the break after shooting just 8-of-30 overall and 3-of-15 from three as a team in the first.
Westminster continued its hot shooting immediately out of the break as Torbert scored two quick buckets to push the Griffins' lead to a game-high 19. Westminster continued to build on its advantage, pouring in another 7-of-11 three-point attempts to cruise to the double-digit road win. Westminster finishes off the season sweep over Western and has now won nine in a row aand 13 of its last 14 against the Mountaineers.
The Griffins, who began the final day of the regular season in ninth-place in the
RMAC men's basketball standings, finished less than one performance index point out of postseason position and finish the regular season in ninth.
Westminster finished with the same conference record (10-12) as eighth-seed N.M. Highlands. The Griffins also missed last season's conference tournament despite finishing with the seventh-best conference record (9-10).
