Salt Lake City, UT - Friday night the Westminster Griffins men's soccer team welcomed into town the Roadrunners of MSU-Denver as it was meeting between two teams who are right above and below each other in the standings, but it was the Westminster Griffins came away with another conference win as a late goal hits the back of the net with
Jack Cardwell as he nets the game winning kick.
"Jack scored a great goal from a perfectly placed cross from Justus," head coach
Josh Pittman said. "Jack has stepped up and has had an enormous impact on our team and overall, I thought the guys played and fought hard today especially after the tough game with Mesa Wednesday night and Metro was rested."
It was a defensive battle on the turf on the campus of Westminster College as the Westminster Griffins were looking to win their third straight game of the year and their second in a row at home and that's exactly what happened as the Griffins added more points in the conference standings in the 1-0 victory and Pittman knows this game could of easily been a tie or even gave up more standings points to the visitors.
"We were very fortunate today because we did a very poor job at the end of the game and did not close it out the way I would have liked. We were lucky to get the three points, but sometimes you need that."
It a physical type of game as both teams were each handed out yellow cards and it was a battle between the goalkeepers with Westminster's
Roark Looney stood tall once again despite being knocked out late in the game that witness a red card for the RoadRunners which led to the first goal of the game and a late penally kick went wide as he adds another victory to his seasons resume and his head coach see's the growth from the young keeper with more starts he gets this season.
"Roark was very good again. You can see his confidence growing and our team as a whole is getting more and more confident with him back there."
UP NEXT: The Griffins hit the road as they will travel to Regis for a 7:00 PM night game next Friday night in Colorado as it will be the first of two games next weekend on the road as the season is winding down this fall.
