DALLAS, TEXAS — Sophomore,
Bri Mortensen had a combined 42 assists but Westminster volleyball (0-2) dropped a pair of matches on the first day of the Patriot Tournament on Friday at Dallas Baptist University. The Griffins lost to 24th-ranked Wayne State (2-0) and Arkansas Tech (2-0), both by a score of 3-0.
The Griffins will conclude the opening weekend of the 2021 regular season with an early match against Eastern New Mexico (0-2) beginning at 8 a.m. (MDT).
Game 1 Recap - #24 Wayne State 3, Westminster 0
Westminster volleyball (0-1) dropped the first two sets by a combined six points including a second set that saw five lead changes and were unable to recover in a 3-0 season-opening defeat at the hands of No. 24 Wayne State College.
Mortensen, the Griffins' spring 2021 leader in assists, began her fall season by dishing out 21 assists in the first match. She had seven in the first set that the Griffins led early and had a chance to win late before a late WSC run closed the set 25-22 in favor of the Wildcats. Wayne State also won a close second set and finished off the match win with a 7-2 late run to win the third set 25-13.
Game 2 Recap - Arkansas Tech 3, Westminster 0
Arkansas Tech used a pair of late runs to close out the first and second sets. The Griffins were within three at 21-18 in the first before Arkansas Tech eventually pulled away to win 25-20.
Westminster had a 22-20 lead in the second prior to a 5-1 run from Arkansas Tech to give it a two-set advantage. The Golden Suns, trailing 9-6 early in the third, reeled off 12 straight points to take control of the third. They eventually closed out the match with a 25-15 win.
Mortensen carbon copied her first performance of the day, tallying another 21 assists in game two for the Griffins. She added six digs on the defensive end while
Kenzy Christensen led Westminster with a trio of blocks.

The Griffins were scheduled to close out the Patriot Tournament against hosts, Dallas Baptist Univ., before all DBU matches for the weekend were cancelled due to COVID-19 protocol. Westminster will finish off its opening weekend against Eastern New Mexico beginning at 8 a.m. (MDT).
