SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster came all the way back from down 2-0 to force a fifth set against Adams State but eventually surrendered a late lead to fall 16-14 in a tight final frame, losing 3-2 on Thursday night at the Behnken Field House.
Bri Mortensen and
Katie Jacox each had 19 assists to help set a Griffins attack that came out slow but turned it on when it mattered as Westminster jumped ahead 13-5 down two sets in the third and eventually led by as many as ten at 23-13.
The Griffins won the third 25-17 and overcame an 18-13 deficit in the fourth with a 5-0 run to level the set. The two teams traded quick runs to the tune of a 23-23 score when
Malinda Messner coupled a kill with a service ace to send the match into a fifth set.
Westminster was able to fend off Adams State's first match point opportunity but the Grizzlies pulled away with kills from Shannon Mulkey and Cindy Garcia to finish off the fifth set, 16-14.
Lyida Parkinson (Miller) led Westminster with 11 kills while libero,
Alanna Lee, led the Griffins defensive effort with 24 digs. Parkinson earned a double-double, contributing 10 digs and one block assist in an all-around effort to help lead the Westminster comeback.
Westminster will continue its stretch of five-straight home matches tomorrow night when it hosts N.M. Highlands at 6 p.m. back at the Behnken Field House.
