SALT LAKE CITY—The Westminster women's soccer team's undefeated run of five games came to an end Wednesday night. The Griffins (3-1-2, 2-1-0 RMAC) lost 2-0 to the University of Colorado Springs Wednesday night.
The Griffins disrupted the Mountain Lions attack, out shooting the visitors 11-7. The Mountain Lions came into the game averaging 23.5 shots per game. The Griffin shad six corner kicks and the Mountain Lions had one.
Westminster had eight first half attempts, double that of UCCS, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Naomi Kehl made three saves for the Griffins and Chloe DeShazer made two for UCCS to keep the score tied 0-0 through the first half.
The Griffins came close to scoring the first goal of the game in the 56
th. Aimee Kurfust got behind the UCCS backline and was one-on-one with the keeper. Kurfurst centered the ball to
Alexa Maple after being forced wide left of the goal by the goalkeeper. Maple's shot was blocked by a recovering defender.
The Griffin had two more attempts but missed the target on both occasions.
The Mountain Lion's Tarah Patterson scored in the 63
rd and 71
st minutes to seal the win. Patterson found some space at the right of the penalty box and scored with a dipping shot just under the right corner of the crossbar. She was played into the left corner of the penalty box and was wide open to score from 12 yards out.
Cassidy Orr's target play up top was key in the Griffins chance creation. Her hold up play under pressure drew several the Mountain Lion defenders, opening up space for her teammates. Nine of Westminster's 11 shots came between
Aimee Kurfurst and
Alexa Maple. Kurfurst led the Griffins with five shots, two on target, and Maple had four shots.
