SALT LAKE CITY—The Westminster women's lacrosse team recorded its first win of the 2021 season. The Griffins scored 21 points to defeat Fort Lewis College.
A slow start saw the Griffins score two goals in the first 15 minutes. Abby Escandon and Caprietta Abbadessa both scored two goals for the Skyhawks to take a four-point lead, 6-2.
Lauren Shoughro scored with 13 minutes left in the first half to kick start Westminster's offense that finished the half on a 6-1 run to take the lead, 8-7.
Fort Lewis started the second half with a goal in the first minute, tying the score at eight.
Phebe Walker and Courtney McCAbe each scored to give Westminster a two-goal lead. Westminster led the rest of the game.
Eloise White scored an important goal while down a player and was followed by
Audree Erekson with a goal to give the Griffins a three-point lead with 11 minutes remaining.
The Skyhawks came within one goal of tying but a 4-1 run with goals from Shoughro,
Hannah Kelleher and
Eden Freiberg sealed the win for the Griffins.
Three Griffins completed a hat-trick. Freiberg led the team with seven points from five goals and two assists. Shoughro recorded five points with three goals and two assists and
Melissa Reeves had five points from one goal and four assists.
Phebe Walker scored four goals and Erekson scored three with an assist to finish with four points.
The Griffins won 21 of the 35 draw controls. Erekson led the team with six, Shoughro had five and
Maddie Kelleher and McCabe each won four.
Shoughro and M. Kelleher each had four ground balls to lead the team. Five others picked up three as the Griffins finished with 34 ground balls.
Mikala Davis subbed in after 17 minutes and made nine saves to earn the win.
The Griffins hit the road for a Saturday game at Adams State. The game is scheduled for 12 pm and can be watched on the RMAC Network through Stretch Internet.
