Griffins Split With Win Over Hardrockers And Loss To Thunderwolves

Box Score DENVER, Colo.—The Westminster women's soccer team lost to the #17 Regis Rangers, 3-17.
 
The Griffins were held to one shot in the first half as the Rangers took control of the game with a 13- point lead.
 
The Griffins shot .750 in the second half with goals from Phebe Walker, Eden Freiberg and Hannah Kelleher.
 
Hannah Bargeron played the full game and led the team with four ground balls and made four saves.
 
The Griffins open the conference season at Colorado Mesa on March 27.
 
SALT LAKE CITY—The Westminster women's volleyball team split matches against South Dakota Mines and CSU Pueblo. The Griffins won a five-set match against the Hardrockers to start the day and lost in three to the Thunderwolves.
 
Match 1: Westminster vs South Dakota Mines (17-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 15-8)
The Hardrockers won the first and third sets recording 20 kills in both and hitting .400 in the first and .514 in the third. Westminster had a slow start recording eight kills in the first and hitting .094 in the first set. The Griffins kept pace in the third with 16 kills and a .343 hitting percentage.
 
The Griffins won the second and fourth sets to force a fifth. Westminster hit .343 with just two errors while the Hardrockers recorded seven errors and a .200 hitting percentage in the second game. The Griffins took advantage of South Dakota's nine errors to win the fourth set while recording eight kills.
 
Westminster won the fifth set with nine kills and a .900 hitting percentage.
 
Audrey Green, Lydia Miller and Katie Jacox reached double-digit kills. Green led all players with 21 kills hitting .372. Miller recorded a .400 hitting percentage for 12 kills and Jacox had 10 kills hitting .381.
 
Malinda Messner led the team with four blocks and Holland Vande Merwe led the team with 15 kills. Bri Mortensen had 46 assists and 13 digs. Katie Jacox reached double-digit digs with 12.
 
Match 2: Westminster vs CSU Pueblo (25-17, 25-17, 25-15)
 
The Thunderwolves held the Griffins under .200 hitting to win in three straight sets. Pueblo recorded 37 kills, 17 blocks and 50 digs. Westminster had 27 kills, six blocks and 47 digs.
 
Mortensen recorded 21 assists and led the team with 17 digs. Malinda Messner was Westminster leader in kills with nine.
 
A few weekends remain in the season. Westminster goes on the road to Northwest Nazarene on Friday, Mar. 20, followed by two home weekends against MSU Denver on Mar. 20 and Colorado Christian on Mar. 26.
