SALT LAKE CITY—The women's basketball team finished the RMAC regular season with a win over Western Colorado which saw the Griffins (11-4, 11-4 RMAC) move past the Mountaineers (13-4, 12-4 RMAC) for second place in the RPI standings.
Mariah Martin and
Sarah McGinley played their final regular season home game for the Griffins. Carlsen, Martín and McGinley were honored before the game.
Westminster's strong shooting, to start and finish the game, provided the foundation for the senior night win.
Hunter Krebs took and made Westminster's first two shots of the game, draining two from three. The team shot 46.7% making 3 from five in the first quarter. The Griffins shot 64.7% and made 3-7 from three in the final quarter.
McGinley led the Griffins with 22 points making 8-13 from the field, 4-7 from three and 2-2 from the free throw line. Martín reached double-figures with 16 points and Hannah Cooper of Western Colorado led all scorers with 24.
It wasn't all offense as the Griffins grabbed 33 rebounds, four steals and recorded eight blocked shots. Krebs led all players in blocked shots, recording a single-game career high of five blocks. Martín and
Lyndzi Rich led both had eight rebounds to lead all in rebounding.
The Griffins led by five at the half, 28-23. They held the Mountaineers to 27.8% shooting and blocked four shots to take an eight-point lead in the first quarter. The roles were reversed in the second quarter with the Griffins shooting 23.5% allowing the Mountaineers to recover a few points on the scoreboard.
The third quarter was a stalemate as both teams scored 15 points and setting up a fourth quarter showdown.
The Griffins offense wasted no time getting started with a 15-2 run to take a 15-point lead to propel the Griffins to the win.
Westminster will host Black Hills State in the RMAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday (Mar. 2) at 5:30 pm. The Griffins would host the RMAC semifinals and final with a win over the Yellowjackets and a Colorado School of Mines loss to Regis.
