Griffins Hold Off Cowgirls for New Year's Eve Road Win

Westminster connected on a season-high ten three pointers in a 69-64 win over N.M. Highlands on Friday.

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Sarah McGinley scored a team-high 20 points and finished 4-of-6 from behind the arc as Westminster women's basketball (6-4, 5-1 RMAC) connected on a season-high ten three's as a team in a 69-64 win over N.M. Highlands (3-9, 0-6 RMAC) on Friday afternoon.

McGinley also finished just one rebound shy of a double-double with two offensive boards to go along with seven on the defensive end.  Abby Mangum earned a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Hunter Krebs added 12 points and 12 boards as the Griffins' played a rotation of only five starters and one player off of the bench for the majority of the night.

Westminster, which began the night as the best shooting team in the conference (.471 fg pct), came out on fire in the opening quarter and went 12-of-18 overall including 4-of-6 from deep in the first ten minutes to jump ahead, 29-10, after the first period.

Westminster cooled off from long range in the second but went into the break with a 21-point advantage after holding the Cowgirls to just 9-of-35 shooting (26 percent) from the field in the first half.  Westminster's offense continued to trend the wrong direction in the third and the Griffins went just 2-of-14 as a team in the third quarter as N.M. Highlands outscored Westminster 20-5 in the quarter to climb back into the game.

After a slow start offensively in the fourth, Westminster connected on shots when they mattered most and never allowed the Cowgirls to even the game despite playing within one possession down the stretch.  Ashley Antone and Jessika Espinoza hit back-to-back three's to get within two with 1:36 to play.  McGinley answered with the Griffins' tenth three of the game, however, to push Westminster's lead back to five going into the final minute.

The senior from Fort Collins, Colo., McGinley, later connected on a pair of free throw's to help ice the fifth-straight win for the Griffins in Las Vegas, Nev., where they have never lost.  Westminster also improves to a perfect 8-0 all-time against N.M. Highlands with Friday's win marking the first matchup between the two since Dec. of 2019.

Westminster will continue it's New Year's road trip into Colorado as it gets set to take on UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
