ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Ashley Greenwood (16) and
Sarah McGinley (16) tied for the team lead in points scored but Westminster women's basketball (1-3) started slow offensively and lost, 70-60, to Seattle Pacific (3-4) of the GNAC on Saturday afternoon at the Nicholson Pavilion.
For a second straight night, Westminster struggled offensively out of the gates and went just 8-of-27 shooting with an 0-3 mark from long range in the opening half. Seattle Pacific went on a 10-2 run to begin the game and finished the opening quarter on another 10-2 run and went into the halftime break with a 38-26 lead.
The Griffins defense helped get them back into the game in the third, holding Seattle Pacific to just 3-of-9 shooting (33 percent) overall and 1-of-4 from behind the arc in the third quarter. Westminster outscored the Falcons 18-13 in the quarter to get back within single digits to begin the fourth.
Westminster was within a single possession after a made
Sarah McGinley three-pointer at the 6:48 mark of the fourth cut the SPU lead just three at 59-56. The Griffins would hit a cold streak from that point, however, and went over four full minutes of game time before they scored another field goal.
Seattle Pacific pulled away in the final two minutes from the free throw line, finishing 15-of-19 overall (79 percent) from the free throw line.
Westminster will begin conference play next week as it travels to take on MSU Denver and Colorado Christian on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
