LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Alexa Maple put Westminster women's soccer (9-2-4, 6-2-3 RMAC) ahead early and
Rebecca Wheeler scored a pair of first-half goals less than two minutes apart as the Griffins shutout N.M. Highlands (1-12, 1-10 RMAC) on Sunday at Perkins Stadium.
Maple, last week's RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, now has four goals in four matches after putting Westminster ahead on Sunday in the 16th minute.
Cassidy Orr sent a long ball down the right wing which Maple chased down and slipped past goalkeeper Katherine Scott for the early 1-0 Westminster lead.
Westminster held onto the one-goal advantage into the late stages of the first half when a free kick was sent into the Cowgirls' penalty area. In a crowded penalty area, the ball fell to the feet of
Rebecca Wheeler who struck a shot past Scott to double the Westminster advantage.
Just over 90 seconds later, Wheeler chased down a loose ball that was headed straight back towards the Cowgirls' net. Wheeler took one touch around the fast-charging keeper Scott and passed the ball into an open net for her third second goal of the half.
The Griffins went on to hold N.M. Highlands to just three second-half shots and finished off their eighth shutout win of the season.
Westminster will return home for its regular-season finale at Dumke Field on Wednesday against Colorado Mesa beginning at 6 p.m. The Griffins, which clinched their postseason spot with their win over Adams State on Friday, will then play its RMAC quarterfinal match next Sunday, Nov. 7.
