Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Downs S.D. School of Mines, 5-1

Westminster scored three first-half goals and won 5-1 over S.D. School of Mines on Sunday.

SALT LAKE CITY - Skyler Kjellander scored a pair of goals in the first 21 minutes and Westminster men's soccer (8-8, 5-3 RMAC) moved three points closer to a postseason birth in a 5-1 win over S.D. School of Mines (1-12-1, 0-7 RMAC) on Sunday at Dumke Field.

Kjellander's first goal, which came just twelve minutes into the match, was his third of the season and came off of an assist from his twin brother, Justus Kjellander.  From his right wing position, Justus played a ball across the goal face at the edge of the penalty area that was brought in neatly by Skyler.  He then picked his head up and struck a shot past the goalkeeper's near side to put the Griffins ahead, 1-0.

It was Justus Kjellander pushing the action again in the 21st minute when he was brought down for a Griffins' penalty just inside the penalty area.  Gavin Flitton would then step to the spot and convert to double the Westminster lead.

Just moments later, Skyler Kjellander again found the ball on his feet inside the Hardrockers' penalty area.  With S.D. Mines fearing another penalty call, Kjellander was awarded enough space to put another near side shot past goalkeeper Tyler Ring, giving Westminster a 3-0 lead just 21 minutes into the opening half.

A mere four minutes of play into half number two, Westminster was awarded a second penalty kick.  Max Bingman then converted from the spot for his third goal of the season to make the Griffins' lead 4-0.  Adam Koblanski netted his fourth goal of the season in the 76th minute, finding space to shoot off of quick passing in the attacking third from a host of Griffins' subs.  Caden Nerdin, Ted Scott and Luis Martinez combined to set up Koblanski who sailed a ball into the top left corner of Ring's net.

George Martinez added a consolation goal for S.D. School of Mines in the 88th minute as Westminster finished the game with only three shots on target allowed on the afternoon.

Ian Rose saw very little action in front of his net and made a pair of saves before exiting the game late to make it back-to-back matches without allowing a goal.

With the win, Westminster sits in third place in the RMAC Men's Soccer Standings heading into the final weekend of conference play next week.

Westminster will travel to play fifth-place Colorado Christian (10-4, 4-4 RMAC) on Friday at 12 p.m., before hosting its final RMAC contest of the season against second-place Colorado School of Mines (12-3-1, 7-0-1 RMAC) on Sunday, Oct. 31, at 1:30 p.m.
