SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster men's soccer (6-6, 3-1 RMAC) answered an early first-half goal with an early second-half goal and
Max Bingman struck the net just six minutes into the first overtime period to lift the Griffins past Fort Lewis College (4-6-1, 1-3 RMAC) in a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Westminster, which now has three come-from-behind victories on the season including a 2-1 comeback win over Fort Lewis back on Sept. 26, went into the half down a goal after Andres Hernandez put a tenth-minute shot from outside of the penalty area past goalkeeper,
Ian Rose.
Westminster responded just under four minutes out of the intermission when
Colin Horman slipped a through ball into
Luke Merrill who then ripped a shot into the left side of the Fort Lewis goal to even the match.
As the second half progressed, Rose made several clutch stops on 1v1 opportunities to keep Westminster in the match. Fort Lewis, which had six total shots stymied by Rose during the match, saw a number of second-half chances go wayward and the two teams headed into overtime deadlocked at 1-1.
With the clock ticking just under four minutes to play in the first period of extra time,
Kaden Amano lifted a 50-50 ball into the Griffins' attacking third. Amano's ball took a high hop that Bingman was able to track down and touch over the keeper's head and into the open Fort Lewis net to give Westminster its first overtime win of the season.
The Griffins, who have now won two-straight and three of their last four, will be on the road next week to play Colorado Mesa and MSU Denver on Wednesday and Sunday, respectively.
