DURANGO, Colo.—The Westminster women's basketball team defeated Fort Lewis, 76-70, improving to 6-2 on the season.
Mariah Martin and
Hunter Krebs led the Griffins with a combined 36 points. Martín scored 19 points shooting 6-16 from the field, making 3-6 from three and 4-4 from free throws. Krebs scored 17 shooting 7-12 from the field, 1-3 from three and 2-2 from the free throw line.
The Griffins and Skyhawks were pretty even in shooting stats. Westminster shot 46% from the field, 33.3% from three and 78.6% from the stripe. The Griffins held a slight edge in the paint outscoring the Skyhawks 40-34.
The Griffins scored 17 points off 14 turnovers and limited the Skyhawks to just seven points from nine turnovers.
The lead changed seven times a first-quarter tug of war. The Griffins opened the second quarter with a 17-5 run for an 11-point lead. A small run by Fort Lewis reduced Westminster's lead to three, 42-39, as the first half came to an end.
The Griffins ended the third with an eight-point lead and were up by nine with eight minutes left. The Skyhawks persisted and tied the game, 70-70, with a minute-six left in the fourth quarter.
Krebs made two steals to limit Fort Lewis to just one attempt in the final minute. Martín and Krebs scored the final six points of the game to ensure the win.
The Griffins play Colorado Mesa on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 5:30 pm in Grand Junction, Colo. They finish the week in Rapid City against South Dakota Mines at 4 pm on Saturday, Feb. 6.
