GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Westminster and Colorado Mesa met in the women's basketball Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference final for a second straight season. The Mavericks defended their title defeating the Griffins, 60-48.
Sarah McGinley (Fort Collins, CO, Heritage Christian Academy, Colorado Christian University) and
Mariah Martin (Sandy, UT, Alta HS, Dixie State University) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Martín scored 32 points, shooting 13-18 from the field, and recording seven assists in the semi-final and final. McGinley scored 24 points, shooting 9-21 from the field, and grabbing 15 rebounds in the semi-final and final.
Westminster started the second quarter with a one-point lead, 14-13, and quickly increased it to eight within a couple of minutes. Colorado Mesa responded and closed the half on a 19-4 run for a seven-point lead, 32-25.
Martin scored seven third-quarter points as the Griffins outscored the Mavericks, 16-6, to take a three-point lead into the fourth.
Mesa regained the lead to start the fourth quarter and took control as the Griffins suffered an offensive slump, shooting 2-11 from the field, and were unable to recover.
Martin and McGinley both scored double-digits in tonight's game. Martin led the team with 17 points and McGinley scored 11.
Kaitlin Toluono (Taylorsville, UT, Taylorsville HS, USU Eastern) led the team with eight rebounds, McGinley grabbed seven and
Hunter Krebs (Hyde Park, UT, Sky View HS) grabbed seven.
The Griffins will be watching the 2020 NCAA Division II Championship selection show on Sunday, Mar. 8, at 10 pm EST. The first round of the tournament begins Mar. 13.
