SALT LAKE CITY--Typically the men's basketball team would have played several games before the conference season began, but this year is far from typical with just two exhibition games under their belt. The Griffins won by the smallest of margins, one point, to open the season with a 58-57 win over the Roadrunners.
Not everything was perfect tonight or went exactly as planned, but that would be expected of a team that is, for the most part, a new team. Eight players played over 10 minutes showing some depth to the roster. Head Coach
Norm Parrish explained that players are still competing to earn their spots on the team and that players are expected to step-up and when someone isn't performing there are others ready to do the job.
10 Griffins scored tonight with
Joey Andrews leading the team with 12 points.
Isaiah Banks and
Brantzen Blackner each scored eight points to provide half the team's points, combined with Andrews.
Reme Torbert led the Griffins with seven rebounds. He was followed by Andrews with six and
Jarrett Jordan with five.
The Griffins 21-55 from the field, 4-25 from three and 10-20 from the stripe. Sharing the ball was not a problem as the Griffins recorded 15 assists.
"We shot bad tonight but I think we just played as a team,"Â
Reme Torbert said in the SportsMedUtah Post Game Show. "When adversity striked we just stayed together and made sure that we didn't play hero ball."
"Offensively its ugly," Head Coach
Norm Parrish said after the game. "We took a few bad shots but I thought we missed some really good shots that if you look even at BYU and Utah Valley we actually made some of those. That just comes with experience and nerves."
The Griffins are back on the court at the Behnken Field House Saturday night at 5:30 pm, for its second RMACÂ game against Colorado Christian Univeristy.
