ALAMOSA, Calif. – Westminster men's basketball held off a furious second-half comeback attempt by Adams State to defeat the Grizzles, 71-67, on Friday night.
The Griffins (13-7, 8-6 RMAC) used a 10-0 run midway through the first half en route to a 13-point lead at halftime. The lead stretched to 18 five minutes into the second half, when Adams State went on a 20-2 run to take a one-point lead with 6:02 left.
With the game tied at 60 and three minutes to play, Westminster scored five straight and led 65-60 with 1:31 left. The Grizzlies made one final push, as Rylan O'Brien was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 9 seconds left. He made all three free throws to pull Adams State within two, but
Joonas Tahvanainen's dunk with five seconds left sealed the win.
Tahvanainen led Westminster with 14 points.
Brandon Warr posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Jai Jai Ely added 13 points and
Jake Connor scored 12 points.
The Griffins will take on Fort Lewis tomorrow night. The game will tip off at 7:30 MST and will be streamed live on the
RMAC Network.
