ODESSA, Texas (Sep. 6, 2019) - Westminster women's volleyball split a pair of matches at the Dr. Steve Aicinena Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas - Permian Basin (UTPB) to open the 2019 season. The Griffins beat the University of the Southwest in straight sets to finish the season-opening day on a high note after falling to the UTPB in their first match.
"Today was a solid start to our season," head coach
Karrin Moore said. "Our serve receive and communication on the court has improved already this season, and we look forward to continued growth in many aspects of the game."
The Griffins swept the Mustangs behind a strong offensive showing from junior outside hitter
Audrey Green with 10 kills and senior middle blocker
Sydnee Simmons with seven kills. Senior setter
Aggie Roese-Olsen had 14 assists, and
Katana Montford and
Amber Lamborn had nine digs each.
"Audrey and Sydney were solid on offense, Amber stepped up in the libero position, and Katana did a great job on the service line and in multiple positions," Moore added.
Green led the Griffins with 11 kills and Roese-Olsen had 14 assists in Westminster's loss to UTPB. The Griffins dropped the first set by three points and the second set by two in a closely contested match. Stephanie Sanchez and Travanna Matthews had 12 and 10 kills, respectively, for the Falcons.
